I am sure you have noticed them, those items commonly referred to as "Splash Pages".
They are usually the type of page where you go to a website and you get a nice introductory page saying something a long the lines of "this is our website click on the picture below to view the rest of the pages.
The idea of these types of pages is an interesting one, it's not an idea that will really work though.
Most of these introductory pages are designed in either Macro Media Flash, or use some other form of scripting to get the desired outcome, they may look fantastic but are not always very effective.
Not only is there the fact that a lot of people find them a waste of time and will probably leave your site as a result, their are also many other issues with using this technique.
Some of the main reasons are:
Splash Pages add an obstacle between your visitors and the content, they also make it harder for Search engines to find your content.
On the note of making your content harder to find through the use of splash pages, some of your potential visitors, such as those with disabilities may also find your content harder to access, especially if the Splash Page is presented in Flash, as it is not always accessible.
So what you could do in stead of having the Splash Page is:
Just present your visitors with the content that you want them too notice and or read.
If you avoid the use of a Splash Page on your site you will most likely get more customers visiting your site and you will be better off.
