Over the last few months I have been reading a lot of material mainly questions from newbie web designers
asking as to whether they should be using Meta Tags and if they are important.
The fact is that in most cases the meta tag is one of those things from the past. A bit like frames.
The only thing that the search engines will recognize the meta tags for in todays way of web design is spam.
For the most part anyway...
Yes it is true to say that their are some users for the meta tag, just like there is for any HTML tag. But
these users are very limited.
For example if you have a site that is built entirely from flash. Then the meta tags will be very useful as a
lot of the search engine bots will not be able to index flash pages. Although even that is starting to
change.
The thing with meta tags is that designers tend to use way to many keywords. More then 10 in some cases. It is
recommended that you only use around three of four, perhaps up to 10 keywords for each page. Any more then that
and the Search Engines will think you are trying to spam them.
Note. A good alternative to the meta tag is to have plenty of links to useful content... This will mean that
your site will rank well and be easily found when a customer looks for your products..
